A balanced diet is crucial to preventing and managing heart disease. Food choices can be confusing so here are some top tips for creating a healthy diet for a healthy heart.

Enjoy Your 5 A Day

The professional opinion, supported by research by BHF is a well-balanced diet should include at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. The blogs on fruit and vegetables will guide you to find the right balance.

Eat more fibre

Fibre helps lower your risk of heart disease. The recommended daily amount is at least 30g a day. You can find fibre in wholemeal bread, bran, oats and wholegrain cereals. It’s also in potatoes with their skins on, as well as fruit and vegetables.

Reduce Saturated Fat

High cholesterol in your blood increases your risk of heart disease. Eating too many foods that are high in saturated fat can raise the level of cholesterol so choose leaner cuts of meat and lower-fat dairy products. This might be as simple as 1% fat milk over full-fat (or whole) milk.

Reduce Salt

Adults should only consume around a teaspoon of salt per day! Avoid using salt at the table and try adding less to your cooking. This simple choice can soon be a standard part of your routine and will maintain a healthy blood pressure.

Eat Fish

Oily fish such as pilchards, sardines and salmon are a source of omega-3 fats. These may help protect against heart disease.

Reduce Alcohol

Try to keep to the recommended daily alcohol limits to maintain a healthy weight and reduce the of risk heart problems.

Don’t forget, giving up smoking and taking regular exercise will also help with your overall health and wellbeing.

There are lots of ways to get the recommended 5 a day portions into your diet. This could be adding vegetables to a meal, chopping them into a crunchy salad or enjoying them as a snack on the go.

The NHS has some great tips for getting vegetables that can help your heart into your diet.

Your new start to the day could include adding grilled mushrooms or tomatoes to scrambled eggs. For lunch, you could enjoy sticks of cucumber, peppers or carrot with a low-fat dip. A quick and easy end to the day is to add a side of peas, mixed vegetables or corn on the cob to your meal.

A well-balanced diet should include a vibrant selection of fruit for a healthy heart. The variety of fruit available today is far greater than ever before so selecting your favourites is easy.

Knowing how much fruit to eat as part of a balanced diet is so important. So what is a portion? How many portions should you eat?

How to Choose Fruit for a Healthy Heart

The professional opinion, supported by research by BHF, is a well-balanced diet should include at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. The recommendation is to change the types of fruit you eat to ensure you are getting a good mix of nutrients, tastes and variety in your diet.

A portion can easily be measured as simply a ‘handful’ of the fruit. If you were to weigh this, it would be approximately 80g or 3oz per portion. Knowing what this looks like is so important so one portion could be any of the following.

7-8 juicy strawberries

1 ripe pear

1 crunchy apple

1 sweet orange

Pure unsweetened fruit juice, pulses and beans count as a portion. Just remember, they only make up a maximum of one of your five a day, however much you eat in one day.

There is a misconception that fruit must always be fresh to give you the most benefits. However, fresh, frozen, dried or tinned fruit can all be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet. Tinned fruit often comes in tins with juices so it is important to check the sugar content of these.

Knowing where to start when choosing your food is so important. The choice is vast but there are specific foods for a healthy heart and enjoying those can have many health benefits.

How to Choose Foods for a Healthy Heart

According to the British Heart Foundation (BHF), A healthy diet can help reduce your risk of developing coronary heart disease. It can also stop you from gaining weight which in turn can reduce your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure.

The best way to consider any type of healthy eating is with a balanced approach. A balanced diet offers all the nutrients you need as well as maintaining your health. In addition, you will feel and even look better!
Foods for a healthy heart are readily available so when you next go shopping, think of purchasing something from each of the food groups below.

Fruit and vegetables. The recommended amount is 5 portions per day.

Starchy foods, especially wholegrain versions of bread, rice, potatoes and pasta.

Low-fat milk and dairy products.

Protein products such as meat, fish, eggs or beans.

Ensuring the choices are lower in fat, salt and sugar can also help maintain a healthy heart.

If you would like to know more about how to lead a healthy lifestyle, maybe make sure your exercise and diet are in line with professional guidance or discuss family history, Dr Karikalan Kandasamy welcomes you to his clinic.
